Possible Medical Reasons for Itchy Palms

Before we automatically assume having itchy palms is related to a fortune or luck, you must rule out any concerning medical conditions you may have.

According to Medical News Today, “itchy palms are often caused by common skin conditions, but they can also signal a more serious, underlying issue.”

The seven likely medical reasons for itchy palms are:

  • Dry skin
  • Reaction to medication
  • Allergy
  • High blood pressure
  • Hand eczema
  • Cirrhosis
  • Nerve disorders.

If your itchy palm symptom persists, be sure to consult with your doctor and get it treated properly.

What Does Left Hand Itching Mean?

Once you have ruled out any medical concerns, having left-hand itching could be associated with money fortune!

Left-hand itching in many cultures is a popular idiom representing someone who may have unexpected good fortune. Maybe something like picking up a £5 note from the ground, getting that promotion you’ve always wanted, to winning the lottery.

Hand Itching – Lottery Win Stories

Having itchy hands is often associated with lottery wins. Believe it or not, there are many palm-itching lottery-winning stories in the past.

  • Mary Shammas from Brooklyn New Year won a $64 million jackpot in 2010 from a lottery ticket she bought after having an itchy left palm during a bus ride. [CBS News]
  • Lucy from Baltimore, Maryland, bought a lottery ticket after three daughters told her their hands had been itching on the same day. The superstition led her to win the $50,000 lottery jackpot. [Newsweek]
  • Mary Wernicke from Saskatchewan, Canada, hit the $60 million lotto jackpot after having both hands itching. [Toronto Star]

Many lottery winners claim they had itching hands before buying the winning ticket. As these phenomena have no scientific explanation, they remain myths or superstitions.

What Is Superstition?

According to Google, SUPERSTITION is a widely held but irrational belief in supernatural influences, especially as leading to good or bad luck, or a practice based on such a belief.

These beliefs are seen as myths, “old wives’ tales” because they are not proven scientifically and only explain the causes of events in ways connected to magic.

Whether you are conscious of superstitious beliefs or not, many exist in our everyday lives.

According to a survey from GALLUP, 1 in 4 Americans admitted to being “somewhat or very” superstitious. Another survey reported that 75% of Brits believe in one or more common superstitions.

What are some common superstitious sayings?

  • “Touch wood.”
  • ‘Black cats are bad luck.”
  • “Walking under a ladder brings bad luck.”
  • Friday the 13th is considered unlucky.
  • “If you break a mirror, it’s seven years of bad luck.”

Having “left-hand itching means money coming your way” is another superstitious belief.

But does an itchy left hand have the same meaning in different cultures worldwide?

What Does Bible Say About Hands and Good Fortune?

The word “sinister” comes from the Latin word for “left.” The left half of the body is often associated with bad luck in Western cultures. Things connected to your left side due to old superstitions about being left-handed can signal tragedy and misfortune. Therefore the same may be said of itchy left palms for most people.

In the bible, there are also references to itching palms.

“But when you do merciful deeds, don’t let your left hand know what your right-hand does. “[Matthew 6:3, The World English Bible]

Often interpreted as the left hand is the receiving hand and the right hand is the giving hand.

“(Jesus) Who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him” – ESV.

Again a positive reference, where the “right hand” is seen as a symbol of honor and status.

Treatment for Itchy Palms

If your itchy hand symptom persists, it is essential to consult your doctor.

Dry skin – Itchy hands could be dry skin. Apply a hydrating lotion 2-3 times a day, maybe enough to stop the itching palm. If your skin is sensitive, stick with a non-fragrant option.

Hand eczema or psoriasis – Similar to dry skin, hand eczema or psoriasis can cause itchy palms. Treat with a non-scented lotion or over-the-counter steroid ointments. You may need to get a prescription from the doctor for more severe conditions.

Allergy – Having itchy palms may mean that you are allergic to something. Use an antihistamine or allergy medicine to treat the symptom. An antihistamine lotion may also help.

Reaction to medication – Itchy hand could also be a reaction to the medication. If you notice itching palms after starting a new medication, consult your doctor for further advice.

Diabetes – Itchy palm is often associated with the effects of diabetes. If you are diabetic with itchy hands, seek treatment from your doctor.

Cirrhosis (PBC) – Primary Biliary Cirrhosis is an autoimmune liver disease. Itchy skin, fatigue, dry mouth, and dry eyes are among the first symptoms. Although there is no cure for PBC, there are treatments to ease the symptoms and prevent further damage to your liver. Please seek medical advice for this.

Home Remedies to Prevent Itchy Hand or Palm Itching

Drink Plenty of Water

Dehydration can cause dry, itchy skin, including itching palms. Drinking plenty of water is the first ring of defense for itching palms.

Apply Cold Pack

Applying a cold pack of ice or damp cloth on your itchy palm can also help to ease the itchy sensation.

Avoid Harsh Chemicals

If you do a lot of housework around the house or in professions such as catering, cleaning, hairdressing, or mechanics, your hands may contact harsh chemicals. Wear protective gloves when possible, and wash your hands with lukewarm water after being in contact with the chemicals.

Stay Away From Scented Products

Having itching palms could also be a sign of sensitivity to certain scents. Use fragrant free hand soap and lotion to see if the itch improves.

Keep Your Hands Moisturized

Keep your hands moisturized by applying lotion 2-3 times a day. Choose a fragrant-free moisturizer to avoid any sensitivity. I like to use a thicker, oil-rich option before bed to give my hand a nourishing treatment overnight.

Avoid Gel-Based Hand Sanitizers

As we co-exist with COVID, we use more hand sanitizers than ever. Gel-based hand sanitizers have a high content of drying alcohol which can cause itch palms. Bring your own alcohol-free, fragrant-free hand sanitizer to avoid itchy palms.

I have never heard of your left palm being itchy could mean there is money coming your way, so it was very interesting to see this possibility. I have had my palms itching during times of being extremely tired, and was told that it was the nerve endings being overstimulated that was causing it.

Seeing that some people had itchy palms before winning a lottery, is superstition and coincidence to me. There is no scientific evidence that connects itchy palms and receiving money, so I doubt very much that there is a connection. Well not in my culture in any case. But curious observation.

    Hi Chloe

OMG how interesting. I wish my left hand would itch already lol! If it does I am sure it won’t be one of those health conditions you mentioned. It’s so interesting how every culture has their take or different beliefs and meanings as to a certain action. My mother is extraordinarily superstitious about birds flying into our house. As she believes it means death. Given my husband and I have a pet bird! She absolute frowns upon it! Lol

I think the left hand itch would be a fun game to play and if it brings fortune, welcome it I say. Great read, I throughly enjoyed it.
